Project 15: Whither Goest Thou

Hello, dear friends, gentle readers, and curious onlookers. It is time once again for a look under the hood of the setting I am preparing for this year’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenge. I have chosen to attempt a space opera style science fiction novel this year and in this blog series I am laying out some of the details of the setting I am building. The other posts of this series all have the Project 15 tag.

In the previous post I laid out the circumstances under which 5 colony ships, arks made of hollowed asteroids, were constructed and sent into the vast reaches of space. In this post I will explain a little about where I decided to send them. Read more…

Project 15: Build an Ark

Yes, my friends, it is time for another installment in my ongoing series. For those of you just joining us, I am preparing for this year’s National Novel Writers Month challenge by sharing with you, the good readers, the world building and back story for the novel I will attempt to write in November. This will be a Space Opera style Sci-fi story set in a far away future where humanity has spread out to planets beyond the Solar System. In the last post I briefly described the events leading up to the first wave of interstellar colonization.

At this juncture I’d like to take a some time to discuss the reasoning behind some of the choices I’ve made to this point. I may even give some hints about what’s coming up next.

Project 15: Future History, part 2

Welcome to another installment of Project 15. In this ongoing series I share with all who care to read it my world building ideas and story development process in preparation for this year’s NaNoWriMo. The novel I will attempt to write this year is a Space Opera style sci-fi tale that will incorporate political intrigue, daring military action, and high stakes counter-intelligence. At least, that is what I hope to accomplish.

In the previous post in this series I laid out the first phase of the future history that will eventually lead up to the period of our main story In that post we reached the phase of human expansion wherein the Solar System more or less thriving and well explored. The U. N. has emerged as the dominant power after a natural disaster wiped out at least two-thirds of the Earth’s population. Let us continue from there, shall we? Read more…

A Good Week To Be A Space Nerd

Thursday NASA announced that they have identified another potentially habitable exoplanet (NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth).  That makes it the 21st such extra-solar sorta Earth-ish planet on the list maintained by the Habitable Exoplanets Catalog.  What makes this even more interesting is that we have just begun to scratch the surface of what might be out there.

Furthermore, on Monday of this week no less a stellar light than Stephen Hawking himself, along with Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner, announced a new SETI project named Breakthrough Listen.  Professor Hawking expressed the motivation for the project by stating, “We believe that life arose spontaneously on Earth. So in an infinite universe, there must be other occurrences of life.” Read more…

Project 15: Future History

MarsColony

Welcome back to Project 15 wherin I share with whoever might care to read it my thoughts, ideas, and processes in preparation for this year’s NaNoWriMo. I am diving into the worldbuilding and backgounding that will inform the eventual 50,000 word edeavor.

In this installment we will begin to discuss the events leading up to the time of the main story. I am placing this story about 3000 to 4000 years in the future. This should provide enough time for several extra-solar worlds to be colonized and for them to develop distinct cultures. I have thought out some highlights of my future history that I would now like to share with you. Read more…

Project 15: Dissecting the question.

The Fleet

The Fleet by nkabuto

Welcome back. If this is your first visit, then welcome aboard.

This post is a continuation of a series in which I discuss some of my thoughts, decisions and processes as I prepare for NaNoWriMo 2015. I’ve even given the series a nifty title now, Project 15.

In the previous post in this series I told you all what genre I would be writing in (Sci-fi Space Opera) and shared the basic premise, or central question, of the story as currently envisioned. In this post I will deconstruct that question a little and elaborate on the main points.  Read more…

So, what’s this all about anyway?

I’ll probably get more systematic in titling these things as we move along. But, for now, this is what you get.

As I stated in my previous post, I’ve embarked upon a new writing project, and am sharing with the blogosphere my musings, processes and conundrums as I prepare for NaNoWriMo 2015.  We have but four short months; so, let’s get started, shall we?
